The number of Indians receiving permanent residence in Canada has increased by over fifty percent since 2016
The Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies, and the difficulty of receiving Green Cards in the US, have pushed expat workers from India north to Canada. The trends indicate that Indian engineers and scientists see Canada as a fascinating alternative country to call home and boost their careers. Indians who gained permanent resident status in the country grew from over 39,000 in 2016 to over 80,000 in 2019, increasing more than 105 percent. According to The National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), full-year reports will show over 85,000 immigrants from India relocating to Canada in 2019.
According to one expert, Canada has been able to benefit from Indian tech workers leaving the US due to challenges with either receiving or renewing H-1B visas and not finding a route to US permanent residency. The US denial rate for H-1B requests for continuing work is currently at 12 percent under the Trump administration. In 2015, the denial rate was only three percent. With the current low number of Green Cards and the per-country limit, Indian talent may have to wait years before receiving permanent residence in America.
